Police Arrest Ogun Tailor Over Fake Banditry Video on TikTok

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a tailor, Kowi Oloyede, for allegedly circulating false information on TikTok claiming that bandits had invaded Atan Ota, causing panic in the community.

Police sources said the case was reported on May 23 by one Ayinla Sodiq of Obasanjo, Ota, who brought the suspect to the station. Oloyede, of Orita Sokoto Road, Atan Ota, was accused of creating and posting a TikTok video falsely alleging the presence of armed bandits in the area. The Divisional Police Officer immediately interviewed him following the complaint.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed that he fabricated the content to gain followers and boost engagement on social media. Investigators said photographs and video evidence linked to the fake publication were retrieved during preliminary investigation. The suspect is to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Abeokuta, for discreet investigation.

The Police Command warned residents against spreading unverified information capable of inciting fear and public disorder. “We urge the public to verify information before sharing on social media platforms,” the Command said, adding that those found guilty of circulating fake news will face prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act.
