NDLEA Re-arrests 83-Year-Old Convicted Grandma, Nabs South African With Drug Consignments

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has re-arrested an 83-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, for drug trafficking barely a year after she was convicted for the same offence, alongside a South African lady caught with large consignments of illicit drugs.

In a statement on Sunday by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency said Mrs. Sunday was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at her home in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, with quantities of Methamphetamine and Colorado concealed around her waist with a wrapper.

According to the NDLEA, her re-arrest followed credible intelligence that she runs a notorious drug joint that harbours criminal elements who terrorise the community. The agency recalled that she was first arrested on May 17, 2025 alongside her daughter, Chisom Uchechi, 32, with 50 grams of methamphetamine, 522 grams of skunk, 260 grams of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grams of tramadol, after which both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or N200,000 fine each.

The statement added that at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State, operatives working with the Customs Service arrested a South African lady, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, with 30 parcels of Thai Loud weighing 32.74 kilograms concealed in two travelling bags, after she arrived from Thailand via Doha aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1431.

At the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, the agency also intercepted nine cartons from Pakistan aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, which after joint examination on October 6 uncovered 354,000 tablets of Tapentadol 250mg weighing 307.20kg, while a consolidated cargo from the United Kingdom yielded six Ghana-Must-Go bags containing 70 parcels of Colorado weighing 75.90kg.

The NDLEA said a clearing agent, John Edrah, 54, was first arrested in connection with the UK cargo, followed by Uber driver Taofiq Ajibola, 54, and two others, Adetunji Adebayo and Kazeem Damola Dosunmu, 48, with both suspects attributing the consignments to associates based in the United Kingdom.

In other operations, the agency said it recovered 1,100kg of cannabis sativa and 17.15kg of cannabis seeds from Adama Inuwa, 46, in Ikom LGA, Cross River State; 702.83kg from three suspects in Owan East LGA, Edo State; 641kg from two suspects in Akure, Ondo State; 107kg of Tramadol tablets in Wukari LGA, Taraba State; and 1,027kg of skunk along Zaria-Kaduna expressway in Kaduna State.

The agency also disclosed that its operatives raided the residence of Christian Chukwudi Uju, 45, at Rukuba Road, Jos, Plateau State, recovering 47 grams of methamphetamine, two pump-action rifles, one locally made gun, 199 live cartridges and ammunition, while Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), commended officers across commands for their professionalism and urged them to sustain the balanced approach to drug control and WADA sensitization nationwide.
