Tragedy struck in Egbeda, Lagos, after a 20-year-old driver, Olumide Olusola, allegedly killed a police sergeant, Johnson Okediji, during a stop-and-search operation along Olugbede Street. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, disclosed the incident on Saturday, September 26, 2026, while briefing journalists on the Command’s activities for the month.
CP Fatai said officers had signalled a Lexus ES 350 with number plate FKJ 223 KX, driven by Olusola, to stop for routine checks. According to him, the driver initially complied but suddenly sped off as Sergeant Okediji approached the driver’s side of the vehicle.
He explained that the suspect knocked down the sergeant and dragged him underneath the vehicle for several metres, despite repeated attempts by police officers and passers-by to stop him. The driver was eventually chased and arrested after the incident.
The police boss added that Sergeant Okediji sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and subsequently referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicle has been recovered to the station.
In a brief interview during his parade before journalists, the suspect claimed the incident was not intentional. “I did not kill the policeman intentionally, it was due to the vehicle’s brake failure,” he said, insisting that all attempts to stop the car failed.
