Digital Switchover: Information Minister Inspects NIGCOMSAT FreeTV Facilities

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, conducted an inspection of the FreeTV Digital Switchover (DSO) facilities at the NIGCOMSAT headquarters in Abuja.

He was received by the Director-General, National Broadcasting Commission, Mr. Charles Ebuebu and the MD/CEO, Nigerian Communications Satellite, NIGCOMSAT, Mrs. Nkechi Egerton-Idehen.

The Honourable Minister praised the synergy between NIGCOMSAT and the NBC, describing the DSO as a vital initiative to bridge the digital divide and revitalize the nation’s broadcast ecosystem.

The Minister, accompanied by heads of various agencies within the ministry, also noted that the project is essential for unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria’s media industry.

Mr. Ebuebu, the Director General, NBC, emphasized that the ‘satellite-first’ strategy accelerates the rollout by 65%, providing immediate access to over 10 million households. He further noted that 40% of FreeTV channels are reserved for regional broadcasters to promote local culture.

Mrs. Egerton-Idehen added that through the ‘Big Picture’ initiative, NIGCOMSAT’s infrastructure will ensure rural and underserved communities gain equal access to educational and entertainment content.

This visit highlighted the ‘satellite-first’ approach to Nigeria’s Digital Switchover , DSO,a strategy expected to fast-track nationwide coverage by 65%.
