Army Chief orders deployment off additional 850 troops to Plateau to curb rising tension
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has authorized the mobilization of 850 extra troops to Plateau with the aim of bolstering current security operations and reducing growing unrest in parts of the state.
.The reinforcements are designed to support troops operating under Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), with the goal of reducing tensions and restoring order in affected areas
Security sources said the newly deployed personnel were drawn from formations in Abuja and Kaduna, and have been tasked with the protection of lives and property, as well as ensuring the safety of residents.
Addressing troops at the Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace in Jos, Shaibu charged them to remain professional, disciplined and resolute in the discharge of their duties.
He emphasised the need for firm but responsible engagement with criminal elements threatening the peace and security of law-abiding citizens.
“The troops must maintain a high level of professionalism and discipline while carrying out their mandate. You are here to protect innocent citizens and restore confidence in the security architecture,” he said.
The COAS assured the personnel that adequate logistics and combat enablers had been provided to facilitate the effective execution of their mission.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army to working in synergy with other security agencies and the Plateau State Government to address the evolving security challenges in the state.
The deployment comes amid ongoing efforts by security forces to stabilise parts of Jos and surrounding areas following recent incidents of violence and unrest.
