ADC Faction Announces Kachikwu as Sole 2027 Presidential Candidate

A faction of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, led by its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has formally adopted him as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The adoption was announced on Sunday during the faction’s national convention held at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja. Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Benue State ADC chairman, Elias Adikwu, said delegates unanimously endorsed Kachikwu to fly the party’s flag in the next presidential poll. Delegates also elected a new National Working Committee, NWC, for the faction.

Newly elected National Chairman, Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, presented the party’s flag to Kachikwu, describing him as the candidate entrusted with “leading the ADC into the 2027 elections”. The new NWC cuts across geopolitical zones and includes BOT Chairman Kingsley Oggah, Deputy National Chairman Johnny Tovie Derek, National Secretary Kennedy O. Odion, National Treasurer Joe Aroh, and National Legal Adviser Chris Ugwu, among others.

The move deepens the crisis within the ADC, which is currently split between two rival camps. A separate faction led by former Senate President David Mark held its own convention in Abuja on April 14, 2026, where it amended the party’s constitution and elected Mark as substantive National Chairman. That convention, attended by over 1,000 delegates and high-profile opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, is part of an emerging coalition aimed at challenging the APC in 2027.

The Mark camp has also expelled factional chairman Nafiu Bala, Rep. Leke Abejide and others over alleged anti-party activities. With Sunday’s convention, the Kachikwu faction is expected to intensify the struggle for legitimacy and control of the ADC structure ahead of INEC’s timetable for 2027. Both camps have vowed to approach the courts and the electoral body to assert control of the party.
