INEC INVESTIGATES ALLEGED AI-GENERATED PHOTOGRAPHS IN PRELIMINARY VOTERS’ REGISTER

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is investigating reports of suspected AI-generated photographs appearing in the Preliminary Register of Voters recently published on its website.
In a statement, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, explained that the register published online on 26 October 2026 is the same preliminary register displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide from 9 to 15 October 2026.
He said that during the physical display, some questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination. The Commission subsequently began reviewing the records and taking appropriate corrective measures in line with established procedures.
INEC clarified that the online publication contains the original preliminary register and does not reflect all ongoing data-cleaning activities.
The Commission added that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings.
INEC also expressed appreciation to citizens and other stakeholders who drew attention to the issue, describing their vigilance as important to the credibility of the voter registration process.
