The Federal Government on Thursday received the fourth batch of Nigerians returning from South Africa, with 282 evacuees arriving at 7:30 p.m. in Lagos aboard an Air Peace flight. It is the largest single batch of returnees airlifted so far.
The returnees were accompanied by two officials from the Nigerian Mission in South Africa. The evacuation is part of the Federal Government’s ongoing free airlift programme initiated in response to xenophobic attacks and renewed hostilities by various non-state actors in South Africa. Since the programme began, many Nigerians have taken advantage of the opportunity to return home safely.
Officials said the continued airlifts reflect government’s commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerians abroad. The arrivals also underscore the scale of concern over the recent wave of violence targeting foreigners, which has prompted diplomatic engagements between Abuja and Pretoria.
Another batch of returnees is expected on Saturday as the evacuation exercise continues. Authorities have urged Nigerians still willing to return to liaise with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa for necessary arrangements.
