Chelle lauds Osimhen, other players after defeating Gabon in World Cup playoffs

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has hailed his Victor Osimhen and other players for their outstanding display in the recent World Cup qualifier against Gabon, where Nigeria cruised to a commanding 4–1 victory. The result has further intensified the debate among fans, many of whom now argue that Osimhen is the greatest Nigerian striker of all time.
Osimhen’s numbers continue to strengthen that claim. The forward has now scored 31 goals in 45 appearances for Nigeria, leaving him just seven strikes short of becoming the nation’s all-time top scorer.
His achievements at club level are equally remarkable. In Serie A, he set the record as the highest-scoring African in the league’s history, won the Scudetto with Napoli, and claimed the Capocannoniere as top scorer. At Galatasaray, he added the Süper Lig Golden Boot and helped deliver a domestic double in the 2024–25 season.
Osimhen was named African Footballer of the Year in 2023 and became the first Nigerian ever to finish in the top ten of the Ballon d’Or rankings.
