Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to economic empowerment, specifically targeting women, men, and young adults. He made this declaration at the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) programme recently held at De Blue Roof, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
The Governor, represented by his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu,said the programme emphasizes the state’s goal of building an inclusive economy that fosters self-reliance and financial independence among residents.
According to him, “This initiative is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to poverty alleviation through skills acquisition. By empowering our women and young people, we are creating sustainable livelihoods and laying the foundation for a more prosperous Lagos.”
The Governor commended the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) for spearheading the initiative, describing it as a strategic intervention that provides participants with entrepreneurial skills, start-up kits, and mentorship to thrive in today’s competitive economy.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, noted that the programme was carefully designed to reduce unemployment, uplift families, and strengthen community resilience. “What we are witnessing today is the practical outcome of a vision that empowers citizens to take charge of their future. The government remains committed to expanding this programme so that more Lagosians can benefit,” she said.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, who delivered the vote of thanks, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support towards the Ministry’s empowerment initiatives. She also commended the facilitators, beneficiaries, and partners for their contributions to the success of MESI, urging them to put their skills into productive use and become ambassadors of self-reliance.
The Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) has, over the years, had thousands of students who graduated from WAPA skills acquisition centres, who form 70 per cent of the beneficiaries after being trained in skills ranging from fashion design to catering, carpentry, ICT, and household essentials production, equipping beneficiaries with both technical know-how and start-up resources.
With the micro enterprise support initiative programme, the Lagos State Government has once again reinforced its resolve to tackle poverty head-on through empowerment, innovation, and opportunity creation for residents across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas of the State.
