FG Issues Flood Alert to 15 States, 69 Communities

A warning notice has been issued by the Federal Government concerning significant rainfall and potential flooding expected to affect 15 states and 69 communities from September 24 to 28, 2025.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre released a warning signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.

The advisory indicates that several regions are at risk of flooding, including areas within the states of Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara. Specifically, places such as Yola, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, Kano, Jibia, Akure, Oyo, Ahoada, Shagari, Serti, and Gusau, among others, are likely to be affected.

He said, “The heavy rainfall forecast for these locations may lead to flooding in the identified communities and their environs. Stakeholders are therefore advised to prepare adequately and implement preventive actions.”

The ministry highlighted that the alert is an element of its regular early-warning system designed to mitigate the risk of loss of life and property during the height of the rainy season. They encouraged residents, local governments, and emergency response teams to implement precautionary steps.
