Police capture notorious bandit, recover arms in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command has taken into custody a notorious bandit, Mohammed Dankani, also known as “Akki”, in addition to other suspects in separate operations across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim B. Maikaba, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Gusau.

He said Dankani, 57, from Kuraje in Bungudu Local Government Area, confessed to being a member of the Kachalla Dan Goggo gang, which has been terrorising communities and carrying out kidnappings in Tsafe, Yandoto, Yanwarin Daji, Damba, Mareri and Saminaka.

According to him, on Sept. 15, operatives intercepted a Toyota Corolla along the Gummi–Sokoto road and recovered four AK-47 rifles, 200 rounds of PKT ammunition, 28 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and four magazines concealed inside sacks of oranges.

One of the suspects, Nasiru Dawan Jiya, admitted that he was transporting the arms to bandits in Gurusu village.

Similarly, on Sept. 19, police arrested two suspects along the Gusau–Sokoto road in possession of 18 fabricated firearms.

“In a separate raid on Sept. 14, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested one Alhaji Shehu Aliyu in Gurusu village with nine sacks filled with dried leaves suspected to be cannabis. The suspect is a repeat offender who was arrested six years ago for the same crime,” Maikaba said.

The commissioner added that investigations were ongoing, while appealing to residents to continue to provide credible and timely information to support the fight against banditry and criminality in the state.
