Bangladesh’s top election official praises INEC team after national elections.

The Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, A M M Nasir Uddin, has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the successful conduct of Bangladesh’s general elections.

Speaking on the sidelines of a post-election dinner in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital, Nasir Uddin thanked the Nigerian delegation for its participation, describing the engagement as vital for cooperation and peer learning between emerging democracies. He said comparing notes with Africa’s largest democracy would help strengthen electoral management across the Global South.

Representing the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, National Commissioner, Prof. Sunday Ajah, congratulated Bangladesh on the peaceful conduct of the dual polls, where nearly 60 per cent of the 128 million registered voters exercised their franchise across two simultaneous ballots.

Prof Ajah was accompanied by the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Plateau State, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq, and the CPS/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola.

Results announced on February 14, 2026, showed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, winning 212 of the 300 seats in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-Party Alliance secured 77 seats as the main opposition, while the new National Citizen Party won six seats.

Voters also overwhelmingly approved the ‘July National Charter’ reforms, according to the Bangladesh Election Commission, with 48.2 million “Yes” votes against 22.1 million “No” votes, marking a major constitutional turning point for the country.
