Ogun 2027: Yayi Faces Fresh Trouble as Alleged Money Demands, Party Rift Emerge

Fresh political tension is reportedly building around Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, amid allegations of mounting financial pressure, strained relationships with political associates and concerns over his dealings with some heads of federal government agencies.

Multiple sources familiar with developments within political circles in Ogun State and Abuja alleged that Adeola’s financial commitments towards his governorship ambition had increased considerably, with one source claiming that more than ₦10bn had been expended on political manoeuvres intended to secure a less competitive route to the Ogun State governorship.

The alleged expenditure was reportedly connected to efforts surrounding the electoral dispute involving the omission of the name of the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, from an Independent National Electoral Commission-related process.

According to sources, the calculation behind the alleged political manoeuvres was to reduce the number of formidable opponents and avoid the enormous financial and logistical demands associated with a competitive governorship election.

One source familiar with the political calculations claimed that a less competitive electoral contest would significantly reduce expenditure on mobilisation, party structures, polling agents, security arrangements and other election-related logistics.

But beyond the political calculations, concerns are reportedly emerging over the senator’s alleged relationships with some heads of federal agencies, particularly against the backdrop of claims that certain budget-related projects are attracting scrutiny.

A source claimed that some agency officials were becoming increasingly cautious about their dealings with the senator, allegedly fearing that decisions taken under the present political arrangement could expose them to future investigations and audit queries.

The source further alleged that some federal agency heads were uncomfortable with what was described as pressure to facilitate financial commitments.

One senior official, whose identity is being withheld, reportedly recounted an experience involving meetings at Adeola’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.
According to the official, some agency heads were allegedly invited to private meetings where financial demands were made.

The official claimed that the senator allegedly demanded specific sums from individuals and expected the money to be provided within agreed timelines.

The source further alleged that the meetings were conducted in a section of the residence believed not to be covered by the property’s closed-circuit television cameras.

There were also claims that the possibility of future investigations by anti-graft agencies had contributed to growing anxiety among some officials.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has not been established to have opened any specific investigation into the allegations against Adeola in connection with the claims contained in this report.

Growing distrust within Ogun APC

Beyond Abuja, Adeola is also reportedly facing growing distrust among some political stakeholders within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress.

Sources alleged that relationships between the senator and certain party leaders had become increasingly strained, with disagreements reportedly emerging over political loyalty, financial expectations and the distribution of influence within the party.

Some associates claimed that Adeola had become less receptive to certain political figures and had increasingly questioned the commitment of individuals seeking to align themselves with his governorship ambition.

A source close to the senator said there were concerns that some politicians were more interested in the financial benefits of the political project than in genuinely building a winning grassroots structure.

The source attributed the alleged distrust to repeated complaints about political associates perceived as placing personal financial interests above collective electoral objectives.

According to the source, some politicians had been privately described as political merchants whose loyalty could not be guaranteed.

Names of some prominent political figures, including Abayomi Arabambi and Segun Sowunmi, were mentioned in conversations reportedly surrounding the senator’s concerns about political alliances.

The source added that the senator was increasingly conscious of the difficulties involved in managing competing interests within Ogun APC, particularly as the 2027 governorship contest approaches.

Alleged fallout with party leaders

There are also claims of growing friction between Adeola and some party stakeholders, with sources alleging that certain APC leaders had been turned away during visits and that disagreements had occasionally escalated during political engagements.

A former deputy governor was also reportedly among those said to have experienced strained interactions with the senator.

The allegations have fuelled speculation about the stability of political relationships surrounding Adeola as the governorship race gathers momentum.

Some observers believe that the ability to manage party stakeholders, reconcile competing interests and maintain confidence among political allies could prove as important as financial resources in determining the eventual outcome of the Ogun APC contest.

For Adeola, whose political ambition has attracted considerable attention, the emerging allegations present questions about the strength of his political coalition and the sustainability of the financial arrangements surrounding his campaign.

Questions requiring answers
The allegations also raise broader questions about the relationship between political office holders and federal government agencies, particularly the boundaries between legislative oversight, constituency representation and the administration of public resources.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola occupies a position of considerable influence in the national budget process. That responsibility makes transparency, accountability and adherence to established institutional procedures particularly important.

It is, however, important to distinguish legitimate legislative engagement with government agencies from any alleged demand for personal financial benefits. The latter would require credible evidence and appropriate investigation.

With the 2027 Ogun governorship contest approaching, the political atmosphere is expected to become increasingly intense.
