*FG AWARDS CONTRACTS FOR REHAB OF 13 POLICE TRAINING SCHOOLS, ADOPTS NEW SOCIAL PROTECTION POLICY
The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country. The three-week project is aimed at upgrading the facilities ahead of scheduled training programmes for the Nigeria Police Force.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, in Abuja, presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The council also endorsed the Revised National Social Protection Policy for 2026–2030 presented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu.
Under the new policy framework, NEC urged all states to align their social protection laws, budgets and implementation plans with the national strategy. The policy is designed to provide coordination, financing, monitoring and accountability for social protection programmes nationwide. It proposes a National Social Protection Council to be chaired by the Vice President, with the Ministers of Budget and Economic Planning, Labour and Employment, and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction as vice chairs. The Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning will serve as secretariat, while six governors representing the six geopolitical zones will serve as members.
Speaking at the meeting, Shettima said government reforms must translate into tangible results for citizens. He noted that performance should be measured by delivery and not mere announcements, stressing that macroeconomic gains are only meaningful when households experience improved purchasing power, job creation and business confidence.
The Vice President further urged that existing programmes should not be abandoned because of new priorities. He said NEC’s mandate is to ensure federal and state collaboration delivers measurable outcomes that directly improve living conditions across the country.
