Army rescues 44 kidnapped Oyo pupils and teachers after month-long operation

Troops of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies have rescued 44 pupils and teachers who were kidnapped by terrorists in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026.

The rescue followed an intelligence-led, month-long operation conducted on July 10, 2026, by troops of 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, led by the General Officer Commanding, Major General C.R. Nnebeife. The operation was carried out in collaboration with special units from the Office of the National Security Adviser, NCTC, Defence Headquarters, Special Forces of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Nigeria Police, DSS, NIA, NSCDC, and local vigilantes, Amotekun and hunters.

According to a statement signed by Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, the operations focused on identifying the terrorist kingpins behind the abduction and dismantling their networks, logistics links, informants and hideouts located within the Old Oyo National Park Forest and other parts of the country.

Multiple arrests were made in Oyo State and other states during the operation. The Army said the arrests “completely disorganized the group, exerted overwhelming pressure on them and ultimately led the terrorist group to unconditionally release the pupils and teachers.” The military added that further operations would be conducted to mop up remaining elements.

The Army noted that the operations were carefully planned to avoid collateral damage and ensure the safe rescue of the children and teachers. However, there were some casualties recorded on the part of security forces.

The rescued pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital. The Army said they would be handed over to the Oyo State Government in due course for reunification with their families.

In the statement, Major General Nnebeife thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for strategic guidance and support, and also appreciated Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for their cooperation. He further acknowledged the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, Service Chiefs, IGP, and heads of other security agencies for seamless coordination.

The Army also thanked media houses and Nigerians for their support and faith in the nation’s security architecture. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to help safeguard lives and property across the country.
