Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for increased international investment in Africa’s energy sector, saying energy security is one of Nigeria’s most urgent priorities.

Speaking at the London Climate Summit, Sanwo-Olu said recent reforms in Nigeria’s power sector have enabled states like Lagos to take a more active role in generation and distribution. He pointed to ongoing results in Lagos, including investments in mini-grids, improved community electricity access, and the installation of over 45,000 solar street lights across the state.

The Governor made a strong case for global partnerships, noting that Africa holds 60% of the world’s solar potential and a quarter of the global population. “If the world is serious about achieving a truly scalable energy transition, investment must reach places that have been underserved for far too long,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu concluded that Lagos is ready for “meaningful collaboration” to expand energy capacity and deliver reliable power to more residents. His remarks align with Lagos’ push to attract climate finance ahead of the state’s 2030 sustainability targets.
