Akpabio Assures Defeated Senators of Support After Primary Election Losses

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has pledged the upper chamber’s support for serving senators who lost out in recent party primaries, hinting at behind-the-scenes efforts to secure favourable outcomes for them.

Akpabio gave the assurance on Tuesday while welcoming lawmakers back from a three-week recess and the Eid-el-Kabir break. He acknowledged the wave of primary election defeats that has affected several ranking senators across party lines.

“I know that there will always be victories and disappointments,” Akpabio Told colleagues
“And in this senate, we are promised that we will have very few disappointments. And I do know that the senate leader and the leadership of the senate is working very hard towards that,” he said

“We will continue to support our members, whether they return in 2027 or transition to other roles in service to the nation.” He did not specify the nature of the support but sources said it could include party mediation and appointments.

The 2026 primaries have seen a significant turnover, with incumbents falling to challengers amid voter demand for new faces and internal party disputes. The development threatens the Senate’s institutional memory, as several committee chairs are among those defeated.
