EFCC Apologizes Over UUTH Incident, Orders Full Probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has issued an apology to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, and to members of the Nigerian Medical Association following a May 12, 2026 incident involving EFCC personnel and UUTH medical staff.
EFCC Chairman Mr. Ola Olukoyede said the apology followed the receipt and review of a preliminary report on the incident. He acknowledged that the wellbeing of Nigerians remains central to the Commission’s mandate and expressed regret over the discomfort caused to hospital staff and members of the public.
Olukoyede reiterated that a full investigation into the matter is underway. He assured that any officer found to have acted outside the acceptable code of professional conduct would face the Commission’s internal disciplinary process once the probe is concluded.
The Chairman said the EFCC remains committed to working with stakeholders to resolve the issues and prevent a recurrence. He urged the NMA and other professional bodies to continue supporting the Commission’s efforts to rid Nigeria of economic and financial crimes and corruption, stating that the incident would not distract the agency from carrying out its mandate nationwide.
