TROOPS REPEL BEROM MILITIA AMBUSH IN PLATEAU, NINE CATTLE KILLED

Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have repelled an ambush by suspected armed Berom militia in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, after responding to reports of targeted attacks on cattle, security sources said Sunday.

According to Zagazola Makama, a security analyst, the incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on 10 May 2026 after troops received reports of gunshots around the Gero area. Sources told Zagazola Makama that troops of Sector 3 mobilised to support Sector 6 personnel already in the area. While attempting to link up, the troops reportedly came under ambush from suspected militia who tried to encircle them from surrounding mountainous terrain.

The military said troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to withdraw toward Nyango and Daron communities within Jos South LGA. Ammunition was expended during the exchange as pursuit operations continued across the area. No military casualties were reported in the Jos South clash.

Following the operation, troops confirmed that nine cows were killed and five others sustained gunshot injuries. A herder identified as Aliyu Yusuf also sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed for medical treatment. The military has since intensified patrols and domination operations in affected communities to prevent further attacks.

The attack comes days after troops deployed to Mangu Local Government Area to stop unrest linked to illegal mining were assaulted by another armed group. During that confrontation, a senior Nigerian Army officer was killed while two armed attackers were gunned down, military sources said. Zagazola reports that violence continues to recur as armed groups launch attacks “knowing that ethnic sympathy and propaganda will later shield them from accountability”.
