Victor Attah International Airport will make history this weekend when Ibom Air operates its maiden international flight to Kotoka International Airport, Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, 2 May 2026.
The Akwa Ibom State Government announced the landmark flight on Monday, describing it as a major step in its drive to expand aviation capacity and position the state as a hub for tourism and investment. The flight follows Presidential approval upgrading the airport to international status and “concerted investments” by Governor Umo Eno’s administration to install required technical and infrastructural facilities.
The outbound service departs Uyo for Accra on Saturday, 2 May, with a return leg scheduled for Sunday, 3 May. Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah, said the maiden trip signals the commencement of international operations from Uyo, while the official opening of the new terminal building and full commercial flight schedules will be announced later.
The government expressed “profound appreciation” to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting approval, and to Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo, SAN, for efforts in realising the vision. It also acknowledged former governors of the state for their pioneering roles in developing Akwa Ibom’s aviation sector.
“This historic milestone represents a significant step in the State’s strategic drive to enhance international connectivity,” the statement read, reiterating government’s commitment to the sustained development of the aviation ecosystem for economic advancement.
Ibom Air, the state-owned carrier, will operate the service.
