The Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has restated its commitment to enforcing a blanket ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small-volume PET or glass bottles below 200ml by December 2025, in accordance with the recent Senate directive of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement released and signed by the Director-General of the agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, she clarified that the action, directed by the Nigerian Senate and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, highlights the Agency’s statutory responsibility to ensure public health and protect susceptible populations—particularly children, adolescents, and young adults—from injurious alcohol use.

She emphasized that the ban is not punitive but protective, aimed at preserving the health and future of Nigerian youth. According to her, the decision is rooted in scientific evidence and public health considerations, as government cannot continue to sacrifice citizens’ well-being for short-term economic gains.

It is gathered that the Agency will continue to work collaboratively with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to implement nationwide sensitization campaigns on the health and social dangers of alcohol consumption in sachets and small bottles.
