Oyo Team Emerges Winner of Senator Abiru Mixed Team Table Tennis Championships

The Oyo State Team has secured the top spot in the Senator Tokunbo Abiru Mixed Team Table Tennis Championship this year.
The championship’s finale was held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, last weekend, where the Oyo State Team emerged victorious against the Bayelsa State Team. The Oyo duo of Wasiu Azeez and Halima Hussein secured a 3-1 triumph over Bayelsa state, while the kwara Team dominated the Lagos Team B with a 3-0 defeat at the N5.5 million prize money event.
The tournament’s sponsor, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, and other notable personalities, including Nigeria Table Tennis Federation President Dr. Adesoji Tayo and Africa Table Tennis Federation President and International Table Tennis Federation Vice President Hon Enitan Oshodi, attended the final, which showcased dazzling expertise and captivating exchanges that mesmerized the audience.
Senator Abiru, in his closing remarks, extolled the athletes for their impressive performances and reconfirmed his commitment to the championship’s progress.
“This tournament has once again shown that when we create the right environment for our youth, talent flourishes, friendships blossom, and excellence thrives. Throughout the championship, we witnessed an abundance of passion, skill, and sportsmanship. Our athletes from across Nigeria and other parts of Africa reminded us of the beauty of competition and the unity that sports can foster,” he said.
Abiru vowed to deliver a more extensive edition in 2026, looking ahead “We are already preparing to make the next edition bigger, better, and more inclusive. Our goal is to position the Senator Abiru Mixed Team Table Tennis Championships as a premier sporting event in Africa—one that places Lagos East, Lagos State, and Nigeria firmly on the continental sports map”
