A statement issued by Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, revealed that the incident occurred on Oct. 11 at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment

The statement said the bodies of the soldier and his wife were found in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, leaving residents of the barracks in shock.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the soldier, who was on duty within the cantonment, sought permission from his superior to attend to some personal issues but failed to return to his post,” Nwankwo stated.

“The lifeless bodies of the couple were later discovered in their residence. Their remains have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event,” he added.

The Nigerian Army expressed deep regret over the incident and extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased.

Brig.-Gen. Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, with findings made public and appropriate measures taken to prevent future occurrences.

The Army appealed for public understanding and cooperation as the investigation continues.

This incident is coming weeks after another Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, died in October 2025 from severe burns after his wife, Retyit Dalong, allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute in Akwa Ibom.
