South Africa to appeal against FIFA’s three-point deduction in World Cup qualifier match

The South African Football Association is poised to challenge FIFA’s decision to deduct three points from their World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho, owing to the fact that South Africa fielded the ineligible Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has voiced its dissatisfaction with the decision rendered by the FIFA disciplinary panel, characterizing the result as “unprecedented.”

In a statement released on Monday, the association expressed that the decision was handed down by a single-member panel without any explanations given or an opportunity for SAFA to present its legal arguments.

The statement reads in part: “As SAFA, we are deeply disappointed with this unprecedented outcome noting that it was delivered by a single-member panel without reasons, and without affording the Association an opportunity to present legal arguments.”
