Just In: FIFA Imposes Sanctions on South Africa for Fielding an Ineligible Player

FIFA, the world’s football governing body, has sanctioned the South African Football Association for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their World Cup 2026 qualifier against Lesotho.
Consequently, FIFA has awarded the match to Lesotho, resulting in a 3-point deduction for South Africa and a 3-goal deficit.
Additionally, South Africa has been fined CHF 10,000, while the player Mokoena received a warning. As a result of this deduction, Benin Republic will now assume the top position in the group, while South Africa will drop to second place. Nigeria remains in third position with 11 points.
